Killing a Windows Service stuck in the ‘Stopping’ state

Sometimes a service can hang/get stuck in the ‘Stopping’ state and you need to force it to stop.

I’m not saying its a good idea as it may have unforeseen repercussions but this can done as follows:

  • sc queryex “ServiceName”. This gives you a PID for the process
  • Kill the process using the task manager
